Implementation of Motivational Nursing Consultation with alcoholics: experience report

Objective: to describe the implementation experience of Motivational Nursing Consultation (MNC) with alcoholics in a specialized outpatient service of a University Hospital. Method: a qualitative, descriptive study as an experience report, regarding the implementation of MNC recorded in a field diary, which addresses the process of integrating Motivational Interviewing (MI) into the Nursing Process to develop a person-centered path and behavior change promoting approach. Results: the implementation required perseverance to development a way of knowing-how to do health in a collaborative, directed, and guided way. MNC expanded the options of strategies and interventions available to the nurse to promote change and culminated in a greater demand from the team and users for the care provided by the nurse. Conclusion: MNC has shown to be an effective approach with alcoholics, by strengthening the therapeutic nurse-user relationship and promoting a more person-centered path, empathetic, and collaborative care approach.
